I don’t know about you but if the Chinese make poisonous dog food and children’s toys with lead paint, then I am NOT going to trust them to make something that I inhale!  I am certainly not going to resell something that gives “600 mouth puffs” of nicotine and anti-freeze.

Most of these electronic cigarettes are made in China and under go no testing.  I find this trend troubling. Here is some more information you should consider if you are thinking of using them.

Recently a shipment of electronic cigarettes being brought in from China was seized by the FDA. Testing of two of the major brands found them to contain several cancer causing chemicals such as anti-freeze.  Not only that but the nicotine delivery was inconsistent meaning you could be getting very high doses at some points and no nicotine at others.

Electronic cigarettes, although not marketed as such, are essentially a new form of nicotine replacement therapy. They are now competing with the other available forms of NRT by presenting themselves as a new kind of cigarette, and without going through all the usual product safety and effectiveness testing required by the FDA. This means they do not have to adhere to any quality control standards, except those imposed by the consumers. So buyer beware.

Smokers may be able to make the transition to e-cigarettes more readily than they take to established stop smoking therapies. Inhaling nicotine vapors directly into the lungs from e-cigarettes may be more rewarding, for example, and may make them harder to stop down the line. This bodes well for the bottom line of industries built on the premise that it’s impossible to stop.  They are just as addictive as cigarettes!

Another consideration is that e-cigs are like toys, something children would play with (which was probably intentional on part of the manufacturers) and will keep you hooked.  Getting hooked on e-cigs may mean you are going to look stupid walking around with a light up toy in your mouth for the rest of your life.

Nicotine Cravings Chart

If you are quitting smoking and the occasion spikes in cravings for nicotine are getting you down, it is important to remember the general trend:  Your cravings for nicotine are going down!  The spikes in cravings are completely normal and there is nothing you can do about them except manage them and get through them.  As your body withdraws from cigarettes there are mental and physical triggers that will make you crave the nicotine more some times than others.  But as your body detoxes from the nicotine and you relearn habits without cigarettes and nicotine, your cravings will decrease.

Here is a chart of the typical smokers cravings for nicotine.  Notice, spikes in cravings but a downward trend.

Nicotine Cravings Chart

Nicotine Cravings Chart

The length of time is not specified because it is different for everyone.  Some smokers who are severely addicted to nicotine may never reach the zero cravings mark.  Most smokers though will get to that point some where between 3 weeks and 9 weeks.  It is just helpful to remember that your cravings for nicotine are continually decreasing.  When things seem difficult that positive note will help you get through.

Learning To Be Assertive Helps To Quit Smoking

“I just quit smoking, but my brother still smokes around me like he wants me to start smoking again.”

Most people, even most smokers, are supportive if you tell them that you have quit smoking.  They go out of their way not to smoke around you and tell you things like “good for you” and maybe even “I’m going to quit soon.”  But there are still some of those people that just want to see you fail.  They may be your friends or family, but they certainly don’t act like it.  If you have people like it that in your life you will have to learn to be assertive.  Coincidentally, the self empowerment techniques you have to learn to become assertive are also the same taught in smoking cessation classes that help empower you to quit smoking.

Being Assertive About Quitting

Being Assertive About Quitting

Being assertive does not mean being aggressive or dominating.  Most people have trouble just asking for what they want.  We either don’t want to cause other people problems and hope they will read our minds, or have to get angry and fired up to demand what we want.  Being assertive is a skill that is linked to confidence but is not essentially related.  If you are a confident person it is easier to assertive.  You can ask for what you need, knowing that you are worth while person that deserve to have your needs met.  This is all taught in books and classes by trained professionals.

What you can learn to do without all that much confidence is to ask for the things you need in the right way, which means being direct and honest.  There is no need to coerce, control, or attack anyone else, and you will be pleasantly surprised to find how many people are very willing to give you what you ask.  Since many of you reading this have just quit smoking, you will have to ask people around you not to smoke near by.  Don’t feel bad about asking, smoking in front of someone that does not want you to is rude, and if they have a problem with it they are inconsiderate one!  When approaching this situation, relax, be polite and calm, and say “could you please smoke somewhere else, I just recently quit smoking.”  It will work 99% of the time.  And the best part is that when you have done this you have also empowered yourself to deal with life without cigarettes.  You are saying to yourself, ‘I am winning the fight against cigarettes’ and it will help you feel more able to deal with life without them.

There is also the common situation in the first week or two of quitting smoking when you are a little extra irritable and someone says to you “I liked you better when you were smoking.”  Don’t listen to them!  This is just a bad joke that people make without thinking of the consequences.  You’re extra irritability is very short term, and if that person really cares about you they can be a little more understanding.

The final benefit of being assertive about people not smoking near you is that quitting smoking is contagious.  Smoking typically starts as a social activity and is reinforced by the group with communal smoke breaks and areas to meet and smoke.  Usually people feel bad about smoking anyway, but when they are the only one smoking they feel pretty stupid.  By you telling others that you have quit and asking them to move along, they will feel even stupider and hopefully be inspired to quit too!

You can learn more about the self empowerment by picking up a book like “Smoke Free In 30 Days” and learn about the confidence you can build to help you quit.  Or you can just go out there and practice asking others to please not smoke around you.

You Will Survive Without Cigarettes – eHealth Radio Interview Transcript

eHealth Radio Interview

Matthew Bucklin, President, Quit Tea LLC

Tuesday, December 21, 2010 – 1:00 pm ES

Q: So everyone knows they need to quit smoking. Is there anything you can tell people that will encourage everyone to finally quit?

A: There are very few people that love to smoke. Most just continue smoking, even though they are fully aware of the damage they are doing to their health, because they are afraid to quit. They are afraid that they will not be able to function normally throughout the day without being able to rely on cigarettes. They are afraid that the stress will be too much, they won’t have the energy, or they will be too nervous to interact with people without cigarettes. So I remind people that want to quit that they will be fine. Not only will they be fine but they will be better for quitting very soon. After you quit you will feel better, have more energy, sleep normally, not smell like cigarette smoke. Your skin will improve, so you will look better. And your lungs recover quickly after quitting. So not smoking will not kill you, but smoking might. The sooner you quit the better, and you will survive without cigarettes.

Q: Most people try to quit over and over again and fail. Can you shed some light onto the reason for repeated failure?

A: There are many reasons people fail to quit smoking. In the study we conducted we found that most people had try to quit 5 or 6 times prior to enrolling in our trial. The products people had used covered the entire spectrum of smoking cessation aids. That includes nicotine replacement therapies like the patch or gum, pharmaceutical products like Zyban or Chantix, cold turkey, and natural remedies like herbs or acupuncture and hypnosis. And the reason people fail varies slightly for each, like not appropriately using the nicotine replacement therapy. But the underlying cause every time is that people do not make a change to their lifestyle, and that makes it too easy for people to fall back into the same old routine that includes smoking. To really successfully quit, you have to make quitting part of a healthy lifestyle that includes avoiding people who smoke and smoke filled areas like bars, eating better, getting exercise, sleeping 8 hours a night, taking your vitamins, and so on. When you fully commit to living better, quitting smoking will seem easy.

Q: So with New Years coming right up, a lot of people are going to make quitting smoking their New Years resolution. Can you give all those people some advice about how to make this time a success?

A: When people ask me what they need to quit smoking, I always say you need 3 simple things: A desire to quit, some information, and a little help. You have to want to quit first of all, or else there is not a product, counselor, or system in the world that can prevent you from smoking. So that is a must. The second is information. I have spoken to people that used Quit Tea that told me this time quitting was different because they have the internet now. It is incredible important for someone to research quitting smoking and understand the nicotine withdrawal process before trying to quit themselves. Before you quit, if you understand what is going on to your body as you go through withdrawal you can prepare mentally and with tricks and tools to help make it easier for you. And third, many people have quit cold turkey, but I think it is important to have a tool, something to help you quit. And it could be as simple as packages of raisins, which my mother’s trick decades ago. Nicotine replacement products are by far the most widely used, and unfortunately have dismally low success rates. This is because people misuse them, and are unfortunately still hooked on nicotine at the end of the box. Nicotine replacement may or may not work for you, but there are so many other products available out there. My advice is to research as many as you can and figure out what will work for you. And with all these three, the desire, information, and a tool, you can come up with you plan for quitting success, which I suggest people keep in a journal.

Q: The smoking cessation tool you created and sell is Quit Tea. Why does that work and how does it compare to other smoking cessation products?

A: I came up with the idea for Quit Tea years ago after quitting myself. I had not smoked a lot, but I did a detox with herbs and spices, and months later I remember trying a cigarette and it tasted awful. I realized there might be a connection between losing my taste for cigarettes and this detox, so I researched the herbs and spices to see if there was anything to it. Well I realized that the spices I had used desensitized the taste receptors in my mouth. So when cigarette smoke passed over my tongue it was no longer pleasant, it actually just sort of burned. This realization inspired me to research all of the nicotine withdrawal side effects, and the corresponding herbs that would help you deal with these side effects. After research, experimentation, and testing, I came up with a formula that worked.

Quit Tea works because it is a simple boil-in-a-bag herbal tea blend, that will help you deal with all of the nicotine withdrawal side effects. It helps relieve all of the added stress and anxiety that you feel from nicotine withdrawal. The herbs also detoxify your body and help improve lung function. And one big selling point is that it helps suppress your appetite. Most people that use Quit Tea report little to no weight gain. As I said before it helps you lose your taste for cigarettes. But most importantly Quit Tea helps you break the psychological addiction to smoking, because it replaces that oral habit and helps you recondition your mind from the typical, stress trigger to cigarettes, to, stress trigger to herbal tea.

There are many products out there, pharmaceutical and natural, but Quit Tea is different because it does not contain nicotine, caffeine, or lobelia. Anything with nicotine will keep you hooked on nicotine. Caffeine does not help. And lobelia is potentially toxic. I wanted to make sure everything in Quit Tea is good for you and can be consumed in high doses, because you should be able to drink a cup of Quit Tea every time you feel a craving for cigarettes.

Q: Can you tell us about the quitting process? What people can expect, or what people should know as they are quitting?

A: There will be times when quitting gets tough, but even if it doesn’t seem like it, the hard part is very temporary. So pre-quitting, I recommend getting everything cigarette related out of your house, telling everyone you know that you are going to quit, and finding a buddy to support you. Then after your quit day you will probably find day 1 to be much easier than you expected. The nicotine withdrawal symptoms will actually peak between days 2 and 4, these are the worst days for side effects severity, but usually people make it through because they are still determined, being so close after their quit day. After day 4 the physical symptoms plateau and will slowly subside each day until the end of week 3. Most people make it to this point with no problems because the physical symptoms work as a reminder to not smoke. At this point there may be some lingering physical withdrawal symptoms, but they are minimal, and at this point people get tricked into thinking they will be fine without sticking to their quitting plan or routine. Don’t fall into that trap. After this point it is going to be all mental, your body has broken the addiction but your mind hasn’t. Psychologists have said it takes 66 days to form a new habit that is why I really recommend sticking to a steady routine of physical activity like walking or working out, breathing exercises, drinking Quit Tea, or whatever it is you are doing to form new healthy habits, be very disciplined for 9 full weeks.

Q: And do you have any tips for the listeners that will help them have quitting success.

A: I have two, avoid places where people are smoking, and avoid alcohol. I hear from a lot of people that it is extremely difficult to quit if they are around people that smoke all day. So if you have a smoking area at work, avoid it. And especially avoid bars for a while. Instead of going out drinking go to the gym, you will look better and feel better after. Drinking will completely destroy your resolve to remain smoke free. Even months later drinking alcohol can be the trigger that leads you to smoking again, so be careful when you drink

FDA Requires Truth In Cigarette Ads

You might have heard in the news that the FDA has passed new regulations on cigarettes manufacturers that require one of nine new possible images that are supposed to go on the label of cigarettes and in the advertisements for cigarettes.  These pictures are grotesque, but… truthful.  And while some consider this being one step closer to a nanny state, it is the job of the FDA to prevent false advertising for food and drug products and require truthful warnings about the possible dangers so that consumers understand and consider the risks: These  images are truthful.

Here is one of the images the FDA will require on the cigarette packaging.  There are eight others as well as a whole set of new regulations for cigarette advertisements that are all supposed to go into effect by the fall of 2012.

There is a good chance that with continued use of cigarettes that this is what your mouth could end up looking like, or worse, which is why this should be considered a truthful warning, not dramatic as has been objected.  It is just a shame that it has to be this way so that smokers will pay attention to it.  Similar warnings, none graphic, but of equal severity are already being used in Europe and cigarette usage is on the decline there.

So that is actually the big debate; will these advertisements be enough to encourage smokers to quit smoking?  The FDA has brought the number of smokers down in American from about 40 million a few decades ago, to currently about 20 million.  This is impressive also considering that the population has grown.  Their education and anti-smoking campaigns have helped, no doubt about it, but the numbers have stopped declining this past decade and seem to have leveled off at the 20 million smokers figure.  It seems as though the FDA is acting in desperation now, not really having a solid plan to keep that number declining.

When you consider that there really isn’t any other substance on that is as addictive and destructive as nicotine, available legally on the market and without  a prescription, these warnings don’t seem so ridiculous.  Obviously alcohol can be addicting, there are alcoholics that have a lot of trouble and physical withdrawal if they do not get a drink.  But not everyone that uses alcohol becomes addicted, actually it is rare.  The very addicting pain medications are only available for use with a prescription under the supervision of a physician.  And all illegal drugs that are so addicting and destructive were banned by the FDA a long time ago.  You could argue that caffeine is addictive but it wouldn’t fit as destructive and the withdrawal from caffeine is minimal and short lived.

One should wonder whether nicotine should even be legal at all.  It certainly doesn’t serve any medical purpose, there is truly nothing redeeming about using it.  These new FDA warnings are practically one step closer in that direction, and I believe taking the plunge and making tobacco illegal would actually be easier for American’s to deal with than these pictures.  The financial benefit to American in terms of decreased health care costs, would most certainly outweigh the loss in economic output from the tobacco growers and the enforcement of laws against tobacco.  Maybe that is where we are heading, or should be.

Smoking Cessation Aid Product Success Chart

I put these charts together so that everyone can see the reality of smoking cessation products… none of them are going to make you quit smoking.  But there are good ones and bad ones.  The top success rates probably mean they significantly help someone quit smoking, like Zyban, Chantix, Quit Tea, and certain NRT products.  The best products seems to be ones that replace the habit, but the difference in success is not significant between these better performing products.

SUCCESS RATES FOR SELECT SMOKING CESSATION AIDS

Smoking Cessation Aid Success Rate Chart
Smoking Cessation Aid Success Rate Chart

The rates that people may argue for these products are debatable.  For example, Chantix had to undergo multiple trial for the FDA and in different trials the long term success rate varied but was always in the low 20% range.  When you consider cost and side effects, it is my belief that the choice is clear.  The below price chart is for just 1 package of each of the products, and the total cost of quitting is multiplied by 10-12 weeks worth.

You should do lots of research and make up your own mind but these are the facts.  These have numbers have been taken collated from reputable sources and brought together for easy comparison.
